In his latest film, Loro, the award-winning film director Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty, Youth) explores the world of the controversial former Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi.
The subject matter is familiar: Sorrentino first came to the world’s attention in 2008 with Il Divo, an unconventional “rock opera” about another former Italian Prime Minister, Giulio Andreotti.
“For me, a movie is to find out a mystery. And in Italy, a lot of mysteries are exactly tied to the church, the politics, the mafia... and I am interested to tell those worlds,” Sorrentino reveals. In addition to Il Divo and Loro, Sorrentino also directed The Young Pope for television, which starred Jude Law.
In Loro, Sorrentino explains, he was focused on revealing the complex character behind Berlusconi’s simple façade. “I was interested in the man that’s behind the politics,” he says.
